ABOUT ACNE

What is It?

Acne is the most common skin condition in the US. It occurs most frequently in teenagers, but can be present in people into their thirties, and even older individuals can experience bouts of acne.

Acne can range from small bumps, that are often red, to larger whiteheads, to deeper lumps (nodules or cysts). Blackheads, an open pore that is dilated, are also included in the definition of acne.

Acne typically occurs in oil-prone areas of the body, like the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back.

Acne’s Effects

Lesions can be itchy and uncomfortable, and they can be disturbing to how they affect one’s looks and how people perceive others to see them. Cystic acne can result in scarring, which can be permanent and affect people’s looks far after the acne has cleared up.
